Besides birth control pills, what can I pair with condoms to make sex safer?

I don't like the idea of pumping hormones into my body with BC, so I want to go to the drugstore today and pick up anything I can to make sex with my boyfriend safer. What are the best best brand of condoms? How does spermicide work? IS there anything else I can pick up form Walgreens/CVS that would help? Thanks.

There are vagisil spermicide strips, it has instructions on the box, it just melts i think.
